For those of you who don’t know, in addition to teaching and speaking about small business leadership and success, I also lead IBN, a trade organization for manufacturers of health, beauty and lifestyle products. Recently, the business building conversations at IBN’s private networking area have increased considerably. If you haven’t visited for a while, today is a good day to stop by and learn something new.

(And if you’re not a member, today is a great day to consider joining IBN!) As you may know, our public networking site is open to everyone, including non-members. The private area is where IBN members speak more candidly and personally about the steps we are taking to grow our businesses. Here are some of the latest topics of discussion. Continue Reading…

The Value of the ReTweet

by Donna Maria on February 8, 2010

Last year, at my invitation, several members of IBN gathered in our private online networking area to discuss how we could support each other on Twitter. It was decided that on Fridays, each participant would select a person, comment on one of their blog posts and then ReTweet the post on Twitter. The goal was to see if this process served to improve each other’s Twitter influence. We did this for about a month.

One of the most exciting things about doing this was that I began to see many of my members come out of their shells to get an idea of how Twitter could support their business goals. Continue Reading…

Publishing comments at influential blogs in your field can help expand your sphere of influence efficiently and effectively. I call this “comment blogging” (I think I made up that phrase?), and I do it regularly. If done over a period of time, comment blogging can result in new client prospects, exciting collaborations and valuable features at other people’s blogs.

No doubt you’ve been encouraged to increase traffic to your blog by contributing blog comments that link back to you. This is great, just be sure your comments always add something of value to the discussion. Continue Reading…

Every one of your customers has an email address, yet many people are abandoning email newsletters completely, or not launching one, to focus exclusively on a blog. You may even be considering abandoning your blog to focus exclusively on Twitter and/or FaceBook. I suppose many people are doing this because it’s easier and takes less time.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the right thing to do. I’ve had a newsletter for ten years. As technology has evolved, I’ve added a blog, FaceBook, Twitter, etc., but I’ve never abandoned my newsletter because it’s very effective at tying all of those “satellites” together. Here are some tips for using your email newsletter to drive traffic to your blog, FaceBook and Twitter pages. Continue Reading…

Recently, I interviewed Shiv Singh live on Indie Business Radio. Shiv is the author of Social Media Marketing For Dummies (affiliate link). He is also the Global Social Media lead at Razorfish, a brand engagement company. Shiv thinks that, in some ways, the term social media is a misnomer. In fact, in his social media presentations and workshops, he often asks participants to refrain from using the term for at least the first hour.

I love Shiv’s perspective on this issue. Social media is icing, not cake, and small business owners cannot effectively use it wthout first establishing a solid niche and plan. Shiv’s insights in this regard are worth paying attention to. You can listen to the show using the podcast link at the bottom of this post. Here are some highlights from the show.
