10 Things That Make A Blog Stink

by Donna Maria

Some things make a blog great while other things make a blog stink. Luckily, the things that make a blog stink are not only easy to recognize, but also easy to fix. While I wouldn’t go so far as to say my blog is great, I am pretty sure it doesn’t stink.

But it used to stink, and that’s why I know what to do to make sure it never stinks again. Here are 10 things that make a blog stink. Don’t do them.

  1. No pictures. A blog post with no graphic illustrations is boring and hard on the eyes. Good quality photos do not have to be expensive. You can take some yourself or get them from 123RF or Fotolia. You can also grab free photos from Flickr via Creative Commons license. Every blog post should have an accompanying graphic that illustrates the main points of the post.
  2. No video. Now and then, it’s good to break things up with video. It doesn’t have to be fancy and scripted to be interesting. The babbling brook by your house, you drawing names of the winners of your latest contest, you opening up the package containing your newly designed labels or business cards. Make your blog move and shake with the reality that is you and your brand. Do this from time to time to add punch, pizzazz and personality to your blog.
  3. No sidebar content. The sidebar(s) of your blog should contain interesting content that complements the main content at your blog. Add your Flickr photo stream. Add a widget with an RSS feed of other blogs. (This one feeds blog posts of IBN members. You can see it in my right bottom sidebar.) Add your favorite books using the Amazon widget. Add the FaceBook Page Like Box.

Sidebar content gives your readers additional reasons to visit your blog regularly. They take a few minutes to add, but they are fantastic at adding new content to your blog automatically. Technology rocks. Make it your slave.

  4. No link love. People come to your blog to be entertained and to learn new and interesting things. You don’t have a corner on that market and you cannot possibly teach people anything without linking to sources and examples for further information. If you share openly, people will remember you for that. They will trust you, and trust always precedes purchase.
  5. No variety. If every (or nearly every) blog post is about your products, then your blog is not a blog. It’s an advertisement. And that stinks.
  6. No “you”. An effective blog is a personal blog. People are interested in buying from you because they trust you. They can’t trust you unless they know something about you. Give them what they need to trust you more. Share a bit about who you are, what you like and don’t like. Make your blog a mini-reality show about the things that matter to you and to your readers. They will be happy and your blog won’t stink.
  7. No way to easily subscribe. An invitation to subscribe to your blog should be visible somewhere near the top of your blog — usually somewhere around the top right portion. Let people know they can have your blog delivered to them by RSS or email, then tell them how to subscribe. If you don’t tell them, they won’t do it. (Here’s how to subscribe to my blog.)
  8. Nothing to do. Give readers something to do! End each post with a question. Include a poll now and then. (They are free at Poll Daddy and a few other places.) Don’t just talk at people. Engage them. Ask them what they think. Invite them to give you feedback and share their ideas, likes and dislikes with you and your other readers. This kind of interaction makes a blog fun. It also makes your more interesting because the information there comes from others, not just you.
  9. No useful RSS feed. If you feed your blog via RSS, don’t just feed excerpts. Feed the whole post! People use RSS readers to aggregate blog content in one place, so they can scan dozens (or even hundreds) of blogs quickly and efficiently. Trying to force them to leave the reader where there is a lot of content to go to your blog where there is a little bit of content is presumptuous and won’t make you any friends.

(No matter how interesting an excerpt is, I never leave my reader to read a post. I only leave my reader if I want to leave a comment post on Twitter or FaceBook, and I won’t do either if you’ve made it hard for me to read your post.)

Your blog is about your readers, not you. Make it easy for them to digest your content and they will reward you with comments, likes, referrals and other things that will help your business grow.

  10. No search box. Make it easy for people to find things at your blog. If you can, add Categories or Topics so you can categories your posts into easily accessible sections. This makes it easy for people to find what they are looking for. If you cannot create categories, at least have a search box somewhere at the top right side of the blog so people can search for information using key words. This search tool will come in handy for you too!

Question: What did I miss? What other things make a blog stink?

    WooHoo dM,

Thanks for this list of reminders for me (not that my blog stinks, since I just started, LOL). I'm official on day 3 of posting to my blog and working really hard to make it about my readers and what they need to hear. So far, great comments, and questions are coming back to me which is awesome! I make sure to respond back and I'm even going to some of the questions I'm getting into blog posts, so that it benefits the whole community.

Honestly in the beginning, I had a fear that might run out of things to say after 30 days, but that's no longer a concern. It's more about sticking to my schedule and making sure I post regulary, as you do here.

I love the idea of including a poll. I'll be adding widgets and a search box on the right hand section of the blog soon. So, thanks, I'm printing this list out and keeping it next to my computer as a reminder :)

Okay, so after reading this great post I know that my blog doesn't stink but could use a bit of sprucing up. Can you say more about #2: Adding video. What camera do you recommend? Thanks! Liz

Ouch!!! How about the IndieBound widget istead of amazon to list your favorite reads??? Allows visitors to shop local. Amazon is pretty stinky to Indies, imho.

Number six is EXTREMELY important. A blog, no matter the subject, should showcase the personality of the writer. Corporate speak and/or stripping posts of the soul does not give your readers an opportunity to connect with the real you. They may like a specific post, but that's usually not enough to make them come back.

This post also confirmed some of the items on my blog's to-do list (add widgets to sidebar and incorporate video). It's good to know I'm going in the right direction.. :-)

Yes! We make our blogs distinctive. We set them apart from the pack.

Great suggestion! Thanks for sharing that option. I am going to look into it.

I mainly a Vado. Google the term and you'll find good prices. I also use a Flip from time to time, but I prefer Vado. Either works. And remember that most smart phone have video applications that are easy to use. There are no excuses not to incorporate video into your media outreach via your blog.

Glad it was helpful to you! Can't wait to see your blog as it continues to unfold.

Engaging is something everyone can do. Combining that with the technology that facilitates it and we are all without excuse. Thanks for being here, and thanks also for Tweeting this post to your followers!

Thanks, Donna Maria! Thankfully, according to your list, my blog doesn't stink. It does need a lot of work, however. This is great motivation to get it spruced up. Once problem I have is that when I let fans know about a blog post on FB, they have a tendency to answer on FB and not go the blog which is where I would rather have them leave a comment or answer the question I've proposed. Got any tips on that one? Thanks!

  • http://www.indiebusinessblog.com Donna Maria Coles Johnson

I do have a tip on that. Are you ready? Get used to it. Seriously, it's OK that people don't comment on your blog and instead comment at FaceBook. More people will see it there anyway, because there are more people on FaceBook than at your blog.

We have to allow our readers to comment where it's convenient for them. As for FaceBook, their friends are on FaceBook. Their own FaceBook Pages are on FaceBook. It's hard to leave your friends and your business where there are hundreds of people connecting to go to a single blog post where you may be the only one there.

And while I'm at it, I'll mention Twitter. Many people today would rather ReTweet than comment. Either one is a blessing, even if the former is short-lived. A Re-Tweet may be worth more than a comment these days anyway, since Re-Tweets increase your Twitter clout and tend to result in new followers.

So just try to relax in the fact that people are reading and benefiting from your blog. Relax in the fact that you are creating a wealth of content that you can turn into a book, a magazine and dozens upon dozens of media appearances, and that people are finding you through search engines because you are blogging about the things they are interested in.

We must go to our readers. We cannot expect them to come to us.

Meet your readers where they are. Enjoy their comments wherever they post them. All roads lead back to you either way.

    Does this help?

Awesome info! Thanks so much for your detailed response. You're completely right, of course, so I'll work on letting it go :-)

Great I love it. I feel I am already doing these things plus starting an online magazine on the same subject as my blog. http://thedivinelaws.blogspot.com/ please email me if you have any useful tips on publishing an adjoining online magazine to my blog with the same subject matter. email: thedivinelaws@gmail.com
