Create the Life You Love

by Donna Maria

I maintained the Lifestyle CEO blog from September 2005 to September 2006. I recently reviewed it for content I could share with you here. This post, from September 27, 2005, was originally titled, “As the Crow Flies.” It makes me smile because Sheryl Crow eventually chose one of the options I mentioned, and then made it one better by becoming a mother.

Today’s USA Today features an inspiring story of the power of options, and the joy that comes with having created the life you love. Sheryl Crow, popular singer, Grammy Award winner and soon-to-be first time wife at the age of 43, is going to marry one of the darlings of the sports world, Lance Armstrong.

I have no personal knowledge about Sheryl, but I wonder if anyone ever told her that she should “get a job” instead of taking a low paying gig in a smoke-filled bar on the seedy side of town. If they did, she apparently didn’t listen, and today, having already lived one dream, she’s perched on the verge of living another one.

Sheryl’s got options and as a result, she can create whatever life she wants. She can marry Lance, have babies (or not) and continue to tour, or she can marry Lance, have babies (or not) and never tour again, or she can scrap Lance and babies and just keep on singing, surviving comfortably on the fruits of her hard work thus far.

While you may never win a Grammy, and you may never be a world famous dancer, playwright, dress designer or software developer, you can create whatever kind of life you want for yourself because the talent you do have is the only one of its kind ever created.

Want to create the life you love? Use your talents to create some options for yourself. Give yourself options and you’ll also give yourself assets. Give yourself assets and you’ll be well on the way to creating the live you love.

Question: How are you creating the life you love?

Thanks Lisa! I meet people who feel they *deserve* their bliss, but they have not been trained or encouraged to follow it. Then once they catch on, many think they have to follow Michael Gerber’s advice and make millions of dollars or their business doesn’t count. Sheryl Crow certainly has made her millions, but that’s not what legitimizes her. I think we need to remember that as we create the lives we love. Money is a fantastic reward, but not because it’s money. It’s fantastic because we can use it to continue to create the lives we love.

I wish you the best with your coaching business and hope you return to visit again soon!

    Hi Donna Maria
This is an interesting question – so many people feel like they don't deserve to follow their bliss… I think the e-Myth (whilst useful in many ways) has done business owners a great disservice in promoting structure above love… what would it take for us all to have it all?

It took me until I was 40 to start designing the life I love – and now I get to be a business mentor, author and speaker – and I have the pleasure of helping other people design the life they love – how does it get better than that??? I am so grateful I took those first tentative steps!!

    cheers
    Lisa

    Donna,

Your message was so timely. I was just on the phone with a friend in transition (divorce, hates his job and on…), so I pointed him to your message.

You know I was told by so many people that I was crazy to leave such a good paying corporate job that few people in the country were doing or able to do at the time. After reading a report in the Wall Street Journal citing the average age of death for a corporate executive was roughly 5 years after retirement age; my deal was sealed.

Thanks for inspiring us…You might have Darryl produce a testimony video profiling a local business owner who overcame others opinions to launch a successful business.
