Exer-preneurship: The Cure for a Flabby Body and a Flabby Business

Let’s face it — we don’t like working out. No matter what new fangled Wii Fit device or belly bustin’ technique hits the market, we still hate interrupting our daily work routine to break a sweat. But what if we could get paid to work out? Well, you can, and I’m going to show you how through a new concept I call “exer-preneurship.” It’s a new way of looking at exercise that keeps you fit and paid at the same time.

Yep, that’s me. Suited up, Blackberry in hand and ready to build my business and my body on my elliptical trainer. Let’s start with blogging. It’s one of my favorite exercise routines. That’s right, I blog while I exercise, and it’s one of the best things I do for my business.

I come up with new post ideas, brainstorm business attraction strategies and even draft blog posts while working out on my elliptical trainer. In effect, I am expanding the benefits of exercise from keeping my body in tip top shape to keeping my business fit. I call this technique “exer-preneurship.” Here’s how I do it.

The Tools

First you need a device to capture your ideas. My preferred gadget is my Blackberry Tour smartphone. I just can’t type fast on those sexy little iPhones, but if that works for you, go for it. You can also use the Droid, the Glisten, the Tilt or whatever works for you.

Next, you need creativity. And don’t tell me you don’t have any. I’ve heard it said that, ” Everything you learned in business school or in corporate America can be outsourced, except creativity,” and I believe that.

An open, exploring mind is your only real competitive advantage. Use it.

Finally, you need your towel, water bottle and whatever else helps you function as you workout.

The Process

Follow these steps or use them to hack out your own.

  1. Get comfortably settled on your chosen piece of exercise equipment.
  2. Open the “Notes” application on your phone.
  3. As your mind and body move through the repetitive exercise motions, the creative energy will flow more freely. Use it to come up with a gripping headline for a great blog post that will share something you are really passionate about. Record the headline in your notes. If you come up with more than one, include them all. You can go back later and choose the best one.
  4. Bang out a general outline for the post’s content. Start with an introductory paragraph, then fill in the outline with body copy. To keep things moving, avoid editing or checking spelling and grammar at this point. Keep the creative energy flowing and focus on just getting the material out. You can edit the post later.
  5. Once your draft is complete, email it to yourself for further editing on your computer. I use an email address created specifically to capture draft blog posts. That way, I finalize them without distractions. I use notes@mydomain.com.

Blogging Is Just the Beginning

In addition to blogging, there are plenty of other “exer-preneurship” tasks you can perform while working out. If you’re working out next to someone, ask what words he or she would type into a search engine to find a business or a blog post like yours. Consider using those words in your next post or site update.

Listen to an inspiring business seminar or book while you work out. Create a list of potential guest blog post opportunities or add new things to your marketing tactics list. (You do have one of those, right?)

Draft your next press release. Call your virtual assistant and hand off a specific task to him or her.

Send a quick reminder to a prospective client or potential collaborator.

Set up a referral introduction between two colleagues.

The possibilities are endless.

Done!

Of course I composed the first draft of this post while I worked out. I also got a ton of other stuff done. Like I always say, “It’s better to wear out than to rust out.”

Now you should have some motivation to keep moving, not only your business but also your body.

Question: Are you an “exer-preneur?” How do you do “exer-preneurship?”

While I understand the concept of using the creativity that is created while exercising, for me, this wouldn't work at all. When I'm exercising, it is my time to DISconnect. It's my time for myself only–no business!

Good for you! I find it hard to separate myself from my business. They are so interconnected, but I can see how this would not work for everyone.

Uhh is it just me or did you grow a mustache dM? You did say that is you right? Wow…I didn't know exercise could change an appearance so drastically! ;~)

I sure hope you let everything go when you do your yoga since the whole idea is to get centered with ones self and the universe…relaxation and destressing are key. Yoga doesn't work if you aren't focused on meditation but instead thinking about your next blog article..

I find myself really having to work on closing my mind to my business when doing yoga otherwise there is little benefit to my psyche. Namaste!

OMG! LOL! totally forgot to include the guest post note at the top of the post. I just added it. Geez, glad I'm not growing mustaches these day! I haven't done yoga much yet, but when I do, it's easy to let everything go. I really considered this post more appropriate for fast moving aerobic exercises like running, stair climbing, etc. Namaste indeed!

    @Amy,

I know a lot of people like you that this idea wont work for but I know even more who have the hardest time staying motivated and sticking to a workout routine. For them getting ahead of the competition just might be the inspiration they need.

    Sweat On!

You make an interesting point, John. I am always glad after I finish a run. I haven't been running for very long, but one of the first benefits I noticed, and it was a huge incentive for me, was that I thought of some fantastic blog post ideas as I jogged. Now that I have my iPhone, I use the timer feature to keep track of my time, and I also use the microphone feature to record a new thought or idea that almost always turns into a new blog post, newsletter article or idea for a radio show. Thanks so much for sharing this here!

I couldn't possibly type on my iPhone (or any other device) when power walking down our country road…but you can bet your sweet bippy I'm using that time to plan and create. I'm like you dM. My business and my life are so entertwined, I find it hard to separate the two most of the time. Some of my best business ideas come to me when I'm out in the fresh air and sunshine listening to the birds chirping and enjoying the native plants. It's just so inspiring. I think I'll go for a walk now.

  • http://www.indiebusinessblog.com Donna Maria Coles Johnson

How was your walk? You know, the coolest thing about the iPhone is that it comes loaded with a mic for voice memos. While I'm running, I just push the button to activate the mic, then I can record a reminder to myself, a title for my latest blog post or article or anything else I think I might completely forget. I don't have to type or write anything down. Like you, I would go nuts doing that. The mic has been a game-changer in many ways. Bet your sweet bippy baby! LOL!

Now Donna, that is a good point. And you know what? I do use the Voice Memo feature on my iPhone. A LOT. In fact, it's how I write my books–as I'm doing the task and taking pictures of it, I record my thoughts about the process, in order to remember what to write later.

I'm still not gonna do business while exercising, though. I do know it works for some people! Just not for me.

It's a great idea – and if I could show as much dedication to keeping fit as I do to my business, both would be healthier. I'm still trying to figure out how to rig my laptop so it can only be operated by stationary bike power (a la Gilligan's Island). Blogging can be such a sedentary business…I need to incorporate some of these suggestions right away!

I feel your pain, that's exactly why I started #FitCEOs and WorkOut Wednesdays at my FaceBook Page! I dedicated myself to my business in the ways I felt I had to. I paid my dues in that way. Now that my business is established (thank God I survived that!), I am excited to set aside the time I need to take better care of myself so the healthy me can match th healthy business. No looking back! Only forward! I hope you'll return to let me know how things are going for you!

    @soap bartender

Just curious…how do you record your ideas while enjoying the outdoors? Keep up the good work by the way!
