How to Turn Unused Space Into a Video Set (Part One)

by Donna Maria

My husband business partner and I are turning the unused space in the loft above our detached garage into a studio where I can record and share more videos to empower you to make smart decisions in all aspects of your business. We’re kicking things off with a series of videos to help you turn unused space in your basement, garage or office into a set you can use to create videos to share your ideas and the products and services you offer.

(If you are reading this via RSS or email and cannot see the video, click here.)

This is the first in a series of videos to show you how we do it, step-by-step, so you can do it yourself! While there are lots of details associated with creating a set, here are the three main things to concern yourself with, as summarized by Darryl in this video.

  1. Lighting. You want to make sure that available light complements you and does not overexpose you, like Darryl is in this video. See how the light makes him glow? You don’t want that. We’ll tell you how to avoid this and other lighting disasters in our series.

  2. Background. Your background should not be too busy. It should fill the space without overpowering it. The background in this video is pretty lousy, but that’s the point! Anyone can turn a lousy space like this into a nice studio, and we’ll show you how in our series.

  3. Audio. You can look fabulous, but if no one can hear you, they’ll turn the channel. In this video, we are using the built-in camera microphone on our Vado, as opposed to an external microphone. The sound quality is passable, but we can do better. Our series will show you how to achieve the best audio quality on a budget.

I invite you to subscribe to my blog so you don’t miss this exciting series to empower you to be best media outlet for your business!

Question: What are your questions about turning your unused space into a set?

This is something I've wanted to do for a while now. I already have designated space but don't know enough about lighting and such. I'm looking forward to the series. Thanks!

Hi Valerie! Thanks for tuning in. We are excited to share. Knowing you, you'll get the hang of everything quickly. I can't wait to share what we have learned, and then to see what you do with it. Your mineral makeup is perfect for showing off on video as you know. Stay tuned, and feel free to post your questions in comments as we go along.

This ought to be a great series and I'm looking forward to it. I wanting to do videos in the future to highlight some products. However, I for one don't really have 'unused' space to dedicate so if you could throw in a few hints about how to make a decent video in a cluttered office/lab or other not ideal space that would be helpful. I'd also like to video some of my gardens in the summer. thanks.

Thanks! The aroma blend you made for me will find a home in a cool place. Can't wait to find just the right location for it!

We'll cover how to maximize tiny spaces. Also, outdoor light is great so long as it's a cloudy day or at dusk. When your gardens are in full bloom, you should be able to find a few minutes each day where you can do a short video to show off your blooms. I will look forward to what you do!

That's just what we did for SoapQueen.TV – it's at the Bramble Berry warehouse and it makes it awfully convenient for filming! =)
