Keeping In Touch With Pen And Ink

by Donna Maria

I rely heavily on technology to stay in touch with people. Through my newsletter, radio show, social networking site, and FaceBook Page, it is easy, fun, and convenient to deliver messages of all kinds with a simple key stroke.

As a wife and mom with young children and a busy home office, I enjoy the convenience of free correspondence that is also quick and efficient. As INDIE goes into new territories, with the opening of our uptown office and the launch of things like INDIEgu, the INDIE Cruise, and other ventures, I thought it was time to create a more personal way to stay in touch. To that end, I commissioned IBN member Sherri Willson of Designer Label Gal (INDIE social site link) to create coordinated folded note cards and business cards for me.

I love the clean, elegant, uncluttered look. The paper is high quality stock so it can take a beating in any mail room. I can even insert one of the branded lip balms I commissioned another IBN member to create for me. I love supporting my INDIEs!

In my experience leading INDIE for over a decade, plus my very close observation of successful entrepreneurs from all walks of life, I believe it is more important than ever to for a brand to deliver a tactile experience for customers and other stakeholders. This is especially important for my business because I do not ship products to people’s front door step.

In his book, Permission Marketing : Turning Strangers Into Friends And Friends Into Customers (affiliate link), Seth Godin says that the average person sees about 3,000 marketing messages everyday. (And that book was published back in 1999!) I’m sure the average business person sees even more than that.

Now, more than ever, the tangible and tactile experience of receiving, opening, unfolding, and internalizing a written piece of correspondence may make the difference between communicating efficiently and communicating with influence.

My new card set makes the INDIE brand more tangible. I expect them to positively influence the INDIE brand. And I expect that influence to positively impact my members.

Question: How often do you send written business correspondence through the mail? How does it make you feel when you receive written correspondence?

Great point dM!! I value and appreciate a handwritten thank you or letter. These days, with the majority of people communicating electronically, the gesture seems extra special. Because of this, I always include one with every order I send out the door. I believe that it helps me connect with my customers.

Alana, the classy handwritten note that came with the lotion bar and soaps you sent me were part of the inspiration for this post. I posted a picture of them at our FaceBook Page and it’s generating a bit of positive discussion. “Classy” is how one person described your note. When I use your products, not only am I enjoying them, but I’m remember the care and love that went into making, packaging and shipping them to me — including the personal note. Makes a big difference! Thank you!
