Mine Eyes Have Seen The Glory Of The Coming Of The Lord!

by Donna Maria

These words never cease to move me. “I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight that we as a people will get to the promised land. … I’m not worried about anything, I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord!”

24 hours after he spoke these words, he was shot dead. I often wonder what the promised land looked like in his vision. I also wonder from time to time if God literally spoke something to him that let him know that he would not live much longer after he spoke these words. What a mystery.

While 2010 may not be the “promised land” about which he spoke, it sure is a better day because he lived.

Let’s celebrate a great leader’s life today!

Question: What do you think of when you hear these words?

Last night I stood in my kitchen bawling as I listened to Dr. King's speech in it's entirety. What an inspirational leader, gift to humanity and great, great loss. May we walk tall and honor his work and spirit.
