Pursuing Fitness, One Small Victory at a Time

by Donna Maria

Yesterday, I started using the pedometer given to me as a surprise Christmas gift by Anne-Marie Faiola of Brambleberry. I decided against a morning run so I could prepare for the hearings on the Colorado Safe Personal Care Products Act, which ran from 3:30pm to 8:44pm EST. According to Kimberly Linton, my guest on yesterday’s Indie Business Radio Show, one should aim for 10,000 steps daily to achieve maximum fitness, especially if weight loss is a goal. When I went to bed last night, my pedometer read 2,789.

This morning, I made a different choice. After taking my children to school, I headed for the gym for a 2-mile run. (Well, I walked really fast for a mile and ran for a mile.) Yep, that’s my treadmill glamour shot. When I got off the treadmill, my pedometer read 6,411. And it was not yet 9:00am.

It’s not as if I haven’t finished a run before 9:00am before. I’ve done it before, although I have not been at all consistent. What’s different today is the pedometer, which objectively reflects the dramatic difference that comes from one simple decision.

I’m nowhere near where I need to be. For me, fitness is a battle I have fought and lost many times before. I’m not brazen enough to say that this time will be any different. But I do know that this day will be different. It already is, and that makes me happy.

Question: What choices can you make today to maximize your fitness level?

For me it's about accepting diet choices to simply be a part of life. It's hard, because I always want to taste the things I know are delicious, though they are not good for me. But I work to be mindful of the bigger picture; I gotta put my health first! Keep up the good work!

I take the staris from the subway and get off the train one stop further from my house. Adding steps – Brooklyn style! btw, I love your I-mean-business treadmill face!

Go Donna Maria! Yay! Way to walk it out, walk it out.

I went to Sweat Class this morning at 9:30 a.m. That meant coming to work, in my work out gear with no make up on and ucky hair, so that I would be FORCED to go to the gym just so I could get my shower in for the day =) (ha ha)

I also started the day with a small apple, protein shake (blueberries, acai juice and whey protein powder with no sugar) and a multi grain low fat english muffin.

When I start healthy, it's way easier to stay healthy throughout the day.

I am planning on some 'reward' cheese later tonight though … =)

That's the hardest part for me — the nutrition. It's always been a weakness. I take on physical exercise with much more tenacity but I am changing that. Over the past year, I have stopped drinking iced tea. It's a trigger beverage for me. I stopped eating pork and beef earlier this year. I have also complete cut out ice cream. I can't just eat one bite. Those are huge changes for me and now that some of the big hurdles are out of my way, I have begun adding them in a more aggressive fashion. It's paying off too. I feel great. I don't look forward to exercise. What I look forward to is the feeling I have afterward. It's priceless! Thanks for your encouragement and support!

LOL! I tried to smile for that picture but it just wasn't happening. Good for you in the stairs. That's one of the things I miss about living int he city — lots of stair and walking opportunities built right in.
