Running Journal: Day 41

by Donna Maria

Last year when I decided to see if I could run around the track while my son played a flag football game, no one was more surprised than me when I made it all the way around 3 times without stopping. I was so stunned that I Tweeted the news. I was even more stunned when I got up the next morning and the first thing I wanted to do was run. That was weird. I kept up my running for several months, then got lazy between October and February.

I picked it back up again in early March and have not stopped since. It’s hard to describe why I like to run. I touched upon the connection between fitness and business in a general sense in this post, but I think I only scratched the surface. I think there’s more to it, specifically where running is concerned. I’ll think about that, and if I can put it into words, you know I’ll share it here.

The photo is of one of my Asics GT-2150 running shoes. I chose this model because a gait analysis showed that I tend to pronate when I run, and I have a bit of a pronounced arch.

You can learn more about the importance of well fitting running shoes in my radio show interview with marathon runner Laura McClain. In the meantime, inspired by Perry Romanowski, I have decided to journal my running, with the help of RunKeeper (see video here).

I started on March 2. I haven’t been counting each running day, but my best estimate is that, since then, I’ve run a total of about 40 days. So I’ll call this Running Journal: Day 41. (I’ll check that number when I get a chance, and correct it if I’m wrong. Which I probably am.)

Here are my running stats for today:

  1. Weather. 72°F, clear and beautiful
  2. Location. Siskey YMCA outdoor dirt track
  3. Distance. 3.02 miles
  4. Calories. 266
  5. Time. 7:39pm
  6. Run Time. 48.27 minutes
  7. Average Pace. 16:01 minutes/mile
  8. Playlist. Thriller by Michael Jackson, Van Halen’s “Jump”
  9. Condition. Very slight shin splint felt in left leg early on, disappeared mid-run. Felt strong, with a surge during “Jump.”

I am a very new runner. I also started kind of late in life at age 46. If you have any tips or running wisdom to share, I would be most grateful.

Question: Do you run? If so, why?

Ah, Donna Maria! When I saw that picture of your Asics, my heart did a little dance. I'm an Asics gal all the way. Those shoes rock. As with any new shoe, you may feel your body doing a bit of adjusting as it gets used to the new feel and maybe form of your running as you break these in. Quick tip about lacing up… the loop-lacing technique works great to prevent heel slippage. Here's a video about it from Zappos. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y0BSXa8vE10 Happy Running! ~Laura

Love that you run, love that you can!

I envy you for having that feeling of wanting to run when you first get up in the morning. I miss that. I've been off from running for over 1 1/2 and I'm trying to get my running mojo back. Good luck and keep on!

BTW – I'm an “Escape From the Cubicle” sister. I attended the workshop when Pam was here in Seattle. Isn't she great?

Congratulations on starting a running program! It actually took me 8 years of running (and 3 marathons) before I could sincerely say I liked running. Now, I love it.

Good luck. Your next step is to find a race (5K) and participate to see if you like it.

Incidentally, I'm wearing Asics right now and have put 695 miles on them. The amazing thing is that shoes usually last me only ~400 miles. Great pick.

Glad you said that about Asics. As a new runner, I'm never quite sure. They do feel better than my last pair. Can't recall the brand — started with an “M” I think. I've also tried Nike and New Balance — they were OK. I really wanted Brooks because that's my son's name, but the shoes felt heavy and awkward on my feet. I think I'm with you on Asics!

Oh my! So much to learn. Now, I'm lacing incorrectly. I've been doing it this way all my life — 26 full years! I guess I can learn a new way now. LOL! Will check the video. Thanks!

Yes! Nice to meet a fellow escapee! I met Pam when she was here in Charlotte last year. I am planning to have her as a guest on Indie Business Radio next month. Stay tuned — I post the shows to Twitter @indiebusiness. Hope you'll join us. Thanks!

If I had hated it, I never would have stuck with it for 8 years. Kudos to you for hanging in there. Asics rock — another commenter just said the same (Laura). She runs 40 miles at a clip and Tweets about her ice baths. Ouch! I'm going to find a 5K. Thanks for your inspiration. Maybe I'll even try to joggle sometime. Now that would be an America's Funniest Home video if ever there was one! LOL!

I admire their endless support, and endless believing .
If since young age they receive good influence by person they admire, they would have became great people with great vision about work and determination. Even if this person only an entertainer.
I think it's because they believe that hardwork will be payed off. And this belief come from their Idol, Rain. How many entertainers can cast this strong belief in our world today?
