Sunday Soup!

It’s that time again, time for Sunday Soup! We had freezing snow and rain here Friday night, so this is a weekend of hot chocolate and sledding. How’s the weather where you are?

You asked some great questions last week and I am here again to answer more. Ask me about social media, leadership, small business success, mompreneurship, family business — whatever is on your mind! I’ll answer the questions you post here throughout the week.

    How fun – sledding – reminded me of when I went sledding with my brother when I was little :) . In that pic your daughter looks like a little dM- so cute!

    I have a question :)
    I'm into and have a passion for so many things – but what connects them is that most of them have to do with healthy living – in both mind and body. I write about these different topics on my blog and was wondering what your thoughts are about that. If I categorize them all appropriately, do you think that works? I just heard some 'experts' say that it's not great to be all over the place, but I think bc of the common healthy/self-care topics that it may work.
    But would love your input.

    Gina: Great question. Let me preface my answer by saying that we can only really guess about how things will work, and don't know for sure until we just try it out. Having said that, here are my thoughts.

    The people who say don't be all over the place are right if you cannot organize your thoughts in a cohesive way that helps and does not confuse people. You are a very versatile person with a lot of knowledge about health and wellness. I think that so long as you categorize things neatly and stick to 3 or 4 main topics with sub-categories underneath (see my upper left) that you focus on, it will be good for your business. Not only that, it will also help you position your expertise so you can attract more people to your teleseminars and all of the future information type products you can offer.

    I once had 45 categories at my blog. It was ridiculous.After several years of blogging, I noticed that the vast majority of my posts fell into 6 main categories so that's what I narrowed it down to. This helps me focus my thoughts each week so I can be more efficient. It also helps new people at my blog know what to expect from me and how to find what they are looking for.

    In your case, I would suggest sketching out about 6 or 7 categories that you are mainly interested in and then going through your blog to see if you can see any patterns. Do all of your posts fit into these categories? If so, you have probably found your “sweet spot” and should stick with that for 75% of the time and vary it as your business grows and/or as your readers (very important!) ask you to share about other things.

    Yes, that helps greatly! I've been thinking I should really look at my blog and 'revisit' my categories. What you said makes a lot of sense, thank you!
    I'm keeping one eye on you because I know you keep up with so much and you are someone to follow. Plus I feel you are really in this business because you have such a passion to serve others in the highest way you can, so thank you for that!
    And I see even Chris Brogan has become a subscriber! wihoo!
