In tough financial times, many businesses scale back. This is understandable since resources, money in particular, are scarce. Also in tough times, small and independent business owners have an advantage. The technology we need to successfully lead our businesses costs next to nothing in dollars and cents. This boils profitability down to something everyone can afford. While you may have to temporarily go without a virtual assistant or delay a planned move to a larger facility, you can use technology to make a welcome and consistent online appearance on your customers’s lives, wherever they may be. This is risky. Putting yourself yourself out there always is. But there are no rewards without risks. Continue Reading…
If you don’t already think The Media Is You, this will change your mind. YouTube recently announced YouTube Direct, a service that allows news organizations to customize YouTube’s uploader to receive video from people who want to share items of interest with the news organization’s audience. The potential of this new format is massive, both for small business owners and for news organizations. Here’s a video overview of the new service.

Look for traditional news organizations that are starved for human resources and weary of having to “compete” with you and me for the attention of their readers, to implement this new technology quickly. The power of this new platform to marry the interests of small business owners and traditional media outlets is very promising. Continue Reading…
Launching a business takes discipline, dedication and massive amounts of elbow grease. Choosing a brand name, creating a logo, designing a website, printing marketing materials, opening business accounts, securing financial resources … the list goes on and on. By the time you’re done, you feel like you’ve scaled Mt. Everest — and in a sense, you have!
Once you’ve done all this work, the last thing you want to do is stand on top of the mountain shouting your awesome news to yourself and the air, right? So what’s the cure? How can you make sure that, on launch day, you have hundreds or maybe even thousands of people to share your news with? What’s the cure for standing on top of the mountain alone? Technology, that’s what!
I love teaching people how to use video and other digital technologies to create relationships and expand their sphere of influence. Every training session is fun and I always learn something new. But this morning’s session was especially entertaining, and I captured it on this video because it was recorded live on Twitcam. Note the “dear-in-the-headlights” look when the video starts. Then note the “shock-and-awe” look when my client realizes that he’s live on Internet TV. And that it actually works.

I thought it was too funny to pass up sharing with you. And I have to thank Dwayne Bond, my pastor, friend and client, for letting me share his shock and awe with you. Oh, and let me apologize in advance if the video skips or automatically loads when you land on this page. As I’ve reported before, Twitcam is great, but it still has a few kinks to work out.
Question: Did this video make you laugh? What funny social media experiences can you share?
July 2009 is one of the most life changing months of my life. It may sound melodramatic, but it’s real. After years of enjoying how technology connects me with like-minded people and people I can serve in some way, I have learned new ways to use technology to change lives.
At the invitation of Sister Cathleen Timberlake, a member of the Indie Beauty Network whom I met through the Handcrafted Soapmakers Guild, I spent Wednesday through Friday leading a 3-day social media training workshop at the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Clyde, Missouri, population 79, not including the Sisters. (Enjoy a video about the community.) This awesome experience has changed my life in many ways, not the least of which is a renewed appreciation for the power of technology. Here’s what I mean. The first time someone advised me to get a website for Maria Grace, the retail store where I sold aromatherapy bath and body products, I ignored him. I told him that I didn’t need a website because people came to my store to buy my products. But as I spoke to him, I was secretly terrified that technology would be distracting and difficult to understand. Turns out, I was right on both counts in some ways. On the other hand, the benefits are amazing. Here are a few of them.
