Welcome WordPress!!

by Donna Maria

wordpress_300I am pleased to announce the transfer of Indie Business Blog from Typepad to WordPress!

Since launching my first blog in 2005 on a Movable Type, I have launched this blog and this one, each on a different platform, in an effort to select the one that I felt would most appeal to you.

I settled on WordPress because it offered hundreds of themes and plugins so I can easily and quickly make the blog more interesting and fun.

For the next few weeks, things will be in a state of transition. For example, because Typepad only allows customers to export blog text, you will notice a lot of blank spaces where photosgraphs and graphics once were. Thank you for being patient while the photos are added.

By the way, if you are thinking about launching a blog for your small business, remember that, while Typepad is versatile and easy to use, if you ever want to export the content to a different blogging platform, they will not release the photographs to you. (As you might imagine, I have an opinion about that little policy, but I’ll save it for another post.

For now, I want to welcome you to my new blog and invite you to have a look around. If you get a moment, would you please do me the favor of letting me know what you think of the new platform? Is it easy to use? Appealing? What would you change? What do you especially like? Any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks!

Looks GREAT. How did the move go?

Love your new theme Donna! I moved from blogspot to WordPress about 18 months ago and haven’t looked back. While I didn’t have the same problem with blogspot and the photos as you had with Typepad, I’ve heard that if they are accessed a certain number of times from the WordPress blog to blogspot, that blogspot will drop them. I ahven’t seen that happen to mine yet.

One nasty thing that the transfer did to my 400+ posts that moved over was to repeat the footer into every post instead of having it located in the footer.

So now when I’m linking to old posts as the related post, I try to edit the article to take that old footer out.

The first few months were a little rocky as I learned the ins and outs, but all those plugins have been really helpful. Best of luck to you as you enter your WordPress journey.

@Chris: This is my second attempt to move and it went well. The first time, I paid $1,500 for people who did a poor job. This time, I paid a fraction and got what I consider to be a good result. I’m glad you mentioned your footer issue so others can see the benefits of starting with WordPress, to avoid the painful transfer issues. I know it will be a challenge for a few months, but having a versatile platform that I control is already worth the additional work. Thanks for visiting and sharing your experience.

I’m contemplating a switch myself. Love the look here at wordpress. I like blogspot just “ok”, but not sure how much work will be involved in moving it all. I am my own “webmaster”, or whatever you call it, so I’m not sure if I’m gonna exert that much energy just yet. We have a huge inventory coming in next week, so it may have to wait!! ha

    Love the new look!
